The Hyundai Kona is a subcompact crossover SUV designed by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai, which was shown for the first time in June 2017. The production version will make its debut later this year. The Kona is company's smallest SUV measuring 4165mm in length, 1800mm in width. It stands 1560mm tall having a 2600mm wheelbase.
Alternative names
The car will be sold in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to "cona", the slang word for the female genitalia in Portuguese. Like Kona, Kauai is a western island of Hawaii.
In the People's Republic of China, the car will be released as the Hyundai Encino.

From launch, the Kona will be available with a 1.0 litre, turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine producing 120hp or a 1.6 litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine producing 177hp with 4x4 all-wheel drive available on selected models

Hyundai recently launched the Kona for the global market and the manufacturer plans to attract the urban buyers with their new life-style vehicle .The Kona is an urban cross vehicle which takes its styling cues from Hyundai’s design language. Since it is based on the i20 platform, the Kona borrows several features from that car and will sit above the Elite i20.
The exterior of the vehicle exhibits cross-over treatment with body cladding and the roof rails. The front of the Kona is equipped with a sharp looking, full LED day time running lights with the headlamps integrated in the body cladding, right at the edge of the bumpers. The fog lamps sit lower and are integrated into the bumper lip of the car. The rear end also has similar futuristic styling cues such as sharp LED tail lamps and silver accentuated diffuse for the sporty touch.
Inside the cabin of the international Hyundai Kona is a brand new technology of a new heads-up display. The vehicle will also feature an eight inch infotainment system which will sit above the centre console and will double up as Sat-Nav. Other features such as power windows and power steering are standard. The vehicle is expected to get two airbags in the front as standard offering.
Internationally, Kona is powered by a 2-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 147bhp and 179Nm of torque, and is paired to six-speed transmission. But for the Indian market Hyundai Kona is expected be powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine producing 121bhp and a 1.6-litre diesel engine producing 126bhp. A 1.4-litre diesel engine producing 90bhp could also be offered in the lower trims. In the local market, the vehicle is likely to be mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox as an option.
When launched, the new Hyundai Kona will rival against the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Ford EcoSport. Also since it is styled as a cross-over, the Kona will compete against the Honda WR-V as well.
